strikes our home every winter. Sometime between the beginning of January and the end of February, every living creature in the house shows classic signs. The cats always show the effects first as they are loathe to exit the house when snow and wind and frigid temperatures await. They will daringly venture outside, gingerly lifting paws high above the hated white stuff, only to scurry back inside within minutes, shooting me reproachful glances as they shake snow from little paws. I am apparently in charge of the universe and somehow I am allowing winter to destroy their outdoor forays. They take out their pent-up energy and frustration by turning the house into a steeplechase. The circuit includes a neck and neck chase over the ottoman, across the laptop (thankfully never actually depressing any keys) followed by a dash and dive for the home stretch behind the sofa completed with leaps onto the end tables leaving the lamps teetering (but somehow never crashing)and a few pitstops in random locations for some good old-fashioned wrestling.
The dogs, made of much hardier stock, will spend time outdoors on their own, but are not impressed with shortened playtimes involving ball tossing and brisker, no-nonsense walks. They, too, resort to indoor tussling which is not as charming as the cat's wrestling matches. Two hundred pounds of dog play is neither quiet nor graceful, but it's still a good indoor sport until the referee sends them to their respective corners.
Human cabin fever is revealed more in sighs and mutters. It's relieved with moaning and groaning liberally sprinkled with vigorous excercise and a sensible diet followed by a touch of couch potato and a dash of comfort food.

So that's what's going on with me....
Oh dear, I'd forgotten all about the cabin fever, 35c here yesterday. I love summer. Here the cats are lounging. Found one spralled on the bathroom tiles. The dog, she just hangs by the back door waiting to be let in any time of year. Me? I just love the cool evenings here after a hot day. Glorious.
Mia, I'm smiling. I hope the idea of cabin fever at leasts gives you hope that it's not permanent.
Brigit, we're all counting the days here after what's been an incredibly cold and snowy winter. Spring, being the capricious character she is, will make her appearance when she's good and ready and never seems to even glance at a calendar. But we're all hoping she decides to surprise us this year and arrive right on schedule.
