These little song sparrows decided to take up residence in an old birdhouse we nailed to one of the fences in the back garden. We never really expected any birds to use this old house as a few have checked it out in previous years and passed on it. Now these sparrows have decided they like it and spent hours today busily building their nest. Inbetween bouts of activity, they sat on the fence, singing in delight. The cats have so far taken little interest in the sparrows, but I'll be keeping a strict eye on them. I'm also wondering why all the birds in the neighborhood have suddenly decided to make a home sweet home in the garden of a house with two dogs and two cats...

Oh my - I hope they escape Stripey's attention! And glad to see sparrow figured out that the stick had to be pointing in the direction of the hole. I have a bluebird box on my back porch that some chickadees built a nest in a few years ago. When the they flew away with their babies, I left the nest in it, not knowing you are supposed to take it out and clean the box so they'll take up residence again. It is empty now - just waiting for new tenants...
I too am a bird freak, Talon. We put up an old box bird-house (nailed it to a tree in front of our bedroom window), and I was delighted when a couple of rather large birds took up residence in it. I love watching them come and go. Birds are one of my top 10 things in life, maybe even top 5. :)
What a cute little house!
So sweet! I love the thought of them sunggled up under a nice covered roof,as I always think bare nests in trees must get absolutely drenched.
And yes, hopefully the cats can't get to them? I suppose it only means climbing the fence, tho?
Aww, Lynn, you'll have to put up a miniature "House for Lease" sign - lol! Some chickadees (one of my favorite birds) had checked out this house earlier in the Spring and found it lacking in some way - or maybe they knew there are like 10,000 cats in this neighborhood!
Molly, they are definitely at the top of my list, too. They fascinate me.
Thanks, Mama Zen. I painted it years and years ago and it used to be on a shelf inside the house.
Jannie, I'm keeping an eye on the cats (and shooing off any neighborhood visitors). Like you, I often think of the washout some nests must become in trees. Somehow, though, the Blue Jay's nest survived being in the cedar...
This is excellent, thanks for sharing!
Oddly last year a wren family bypassed the bird house for a hanging pot that had nothing planted in it yet. I had stuck some spanish moss in it and they built their nest around that. This year I swear I saw them looking at it in dismay because it has a plant in it now.
Thanks, Mark.
Lynn, that's so funny! I can see their expressions perfecty - lol!
Cool! lucky you have time to bird watch-
Our birds have been strange lately too. The crow still loudly announces the food I toss out for them. Today, a female Catbird with a mouth full of green worm was chastizing Mischief from the deck rails. These birds put eggs in other nests n there isin't one I can find on the deck- Maybe she was interrupted digging thru the gutters out there. Not often you see a bird trying to intimidate a cat!
Snaggle, I usually find some time in the morning when I'm having my coffee - the time when the birds seem to be most active.
The blue jays and the attack robin don't seem too afraid of the cats and dive bomb them regularly - lol!
We are surrounded by trees, so I've never put up a birdhouse. But it's now very tempting. I'll remember to put a "house for lease" sign up. Love the colours of yours, or should I say the sparrows'.
