Mood...oops...Moon Ring...

November's Frosty Full Moon. I shot this on Saturday night when the sky was fairly clear. Technically, the full moon is tonight, but the clouds are thick here and there's no amazing moon to gaze up at or beautiful white light to light the walk for me and the dogs. A ring around the moon is caused from moonlight reflecting off of ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. There was a thin veil of clouds so no stars were visible, but folklore has it that a moon ring forecasts a storm and the number of stars visible within the halo determine the number of days before the bad weather arrives. We are expecting rain tomorrow...so I'm thinking there was probably only 1 star within the halo...

I love this. I love too to think the full moon shining in our sky is the same one that looks down on you.

This is so very beautiful. I have never heard of ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. I find it amazing that our moon is also your moon, that it sees both warm nights here and such winter conditions over you all in 24 hours.

Nice Picture. By the way, I just read the last post as well: "shedding". And I love it! Short, bittersweet and rich with meaning - my favorite kind of poetry.

A ring around the moon! Was there an owl outside your window, too? Hope not! ;-)

Ring around the moon sounds like a song title! I've never seen that before, probably because of the lack of ice crystals. And I remember mood rings - I wonder if they worked. :) I love your shot of the moon - it was beautiful here last night, a clear one for us.

I never realized it before but when I let the dog out in the am I always look up...most of the time to find the moon. When I arrive at night with my wife or by myself I always look up to see what is going on up there. Beautiful picture. My wife does it too...we are both head in the clouds when it comes to that.

Beautiful photo, Talon.

I flew into Calgary yesterday and was welcomed with temperatures of minus one million (or close enough).

I'm not kidding, during the winter months, your photos are the only things that keep me sane!

Thanks for the view of that big moon. Nice touch to have the branch silhouetted in front. Gives it a spooky look and the ring is just cool. No moon here. We got serious weather.

Cool, I had never heard that before talon.

This is perfection. Wow. I've never been able to capture even the fullest moon...

I'd learned that somewhere along the way, that a ring around the moon means snowstorm the next day. But we really don't get that here. I was disappointed to get up extra early this a.m., hoping to take pictures of frost -- and finding none.

Looking forward to your beautiful snow-bound pictures, Talon.

I would have so regretted seeing this if you had not captured it for us on camera. How beautiful. Thanks.

Such a great picture! I haven't been able to see the full moon for the clouds, so I really appreciate your picture!

Beautiful. Often when I can't sleep I sit on the back patio and look at the night sky. I may miss sleep, but I've seen all kinds of things I never knew were out there--rings around the moon (one night there were 3)orange moons, shooting stars, and topnight clouds that looked like the ruffled breasts of grey geese. Loved the pic.

er that should be tonight, not topnight, tho that's an interesting word...creative typos. ;)

Finally made it back to finish what I started this morning.

That is cool! The moon has been lovely here the past several nights. Crystal clear skies and cool temps.

Wow- I took pics of that moon too, from the deck- but haven't uploaded them yet! I'm sure yours came out way better! Can really see that halo too!

Joan, and now I'm wondering where the magic wall is that keeps the warm air and the cold air apart :)

Marilyn, it's neat, isn't it? I guess the Moon is the King of the World - the Sun being the Queen. (I think the Sun is female though I don't know why).

Fyodor, thank you! :)

Thank you, Hilary!

Shay, no owls :)

Lynn, my sister used to have a mood ring. It was always black...I don't remember what that means, but I don't think it was good - lol!

Ellis, thanks!

Lorraine, thank you! :)

Brian, thanks. It was really neat. Though there were light thin clouds so it wasn't a 100 percent clear, but I was thrilled the ring showed up on camera.

Jerry, thanks. We're a family of star gazers here. There's something calming in a night sky.

Mama Zen, thank you!

deb, thanks. It takes me a lot of shots (thank heavens for digital), but I finally get the odd good one.

b, thank you. Oh, I don't envy you that Calgary weather! It's just so hard to get into the winter mindset, isn't it? I'll try to keep you sane, but even I get depressed thinking of the cold cold cold months ahead...

Leenie, you're welcome. I shot this over the house where one of the immense walnut trees is and the branches added that spooky look. Wow - saw your shots (which were gorgeous) and I feel for you. I hope it doesn't impact the holiday weekend too much for you!

kkrige, thanks. The sky always fascinates me.

Glad you enjoyed, Claudia. Thank you!

Courtney, thank you!

Meredith, frost is so lovely to photograph. I'll look forward to your beautiful shots when you get some. I keep my fingers crossed that the snow doesn't show up here until late December - then it becomes like magic snow for the holiday season :)

Sheila, thank you!

Annie, I'm glad you got to see it. Thank you.

Teresa, it's certainly hit or miss with the cloud cover, isn't it? But the clouds got thin enough I could get this shot.

hedgewitch, like you, I find something fascinating in the sky every day. It's an ever-changing canvas of delight. Thank you.

Snaggle, the halo really captured my eye. I'm glad the shots turned out. Hope yours did!

Thank you, gospelwriter!

Wow! That is a stunning phenomenon and capture.

It was amazing to me how full the moon seemed for 3 whole nights. Wonder if it's still full tonight? I'll have to pop out to see.

xoxo

It was a lovely moon, Jannie,...but we only got to see it the one night...and just bits and pieces through the clouds the other two. Thank you! xxx

That is a stunning image, Talon. It's like a lone lightbulb in the branches, showing us the way!

Simply breathtaking. I wished I had a good camera Saturday night. It was coming up over one of the bridges in NYC. It did seem full lots longer this cycle. Thank you for your kind comment on Laura's bog. I have fallen in love with your photography and your prose.
