Gone, but not forgotten...

A silhouette morphed against the tangerine sunset’s heat waves, playing tricks on her eyes and heart. It couldn’t be...he had left years ago.
The silhouette moved closer, gaining shape and substance with every step. She shaded her eyes, standing up. “Jon?” she whispered, disbelieving.
     “Honey, I’m back.”
“It’s about time. Did you remember the milk?”

A Friday Flash 55 for the G-Man

So intriguing. I'm wondering if her hallucination causes her to hear voices or if it was the longest trip ever to the store.

Leenie said...

That one comes right in the middle of the story. So many questions. Where did he really go? Was he truly back and did he come to get her? We need more than 55! Your photo is amazing!

Hi Talon .. superb .. the milk: and thereby hangs the tale .. doors into the night, or back from the sunset towards dawn ..

Great photo .. cheers Hilary

Yes honey I remembered the milk.
God that line was so long.
Wait a second I forget the bread.
I'll be right back.

Really cute 55

Another gorgeous photo! This 55 is so engaging it has me asking questions: Is she hallucinating? Is he a ghost? Or someone posing as Jon to take advantage of her? Did he really come back after all those years? And she took him back? Awesome bit of fiction!

G said...

I can imagine him asking, "Milk?"

LL Cool Joe said...

Why is it that we are always sent out to get milk? I eventually make it back with everything but the milk.

Lorraine said...

it touched me so, and had me crack up and the photo is wonderful, ahhh amazing you are lol

Lynn said...

I hope he remembered the milk. :)

TechnoBabe said...

P.S. I am happily watching the French Open with all of my might!!!!
oh. Oh. I truly enjoyed Laura Newcombe; the first runner up to the Scripps National Spelling Bee televised live on ESPN last night! She was absolutely delightful! Go Canada!! She did a wonderful job! She is fun fun to watch.

Lovely writing (esp. tangerine sunset’s heat waves), intriguing ending (then what??)... Amazing photo!

Patricia said...

How did you know about my husband and I never send him to the hardware store alone - never!

Alice Audrey said...

LOL. She's just lucky it wasn't a newspaper or a pack of cigarettes. Then she really would never see him again.

Jannie Funster said...

This made me laugh! 25 years. :)

You have such a great imagination!!

xoxoxo

Mama Zen said...

Of course he didn't.

lime said...

hahaha, so many ways to interpret the twist but i'm going with a comic twist.

Love the cat header, thought the post might be something to do with it, so I was looking for a cat in the sunset!!

A 55 after my own heart. Love this style.

hedgewitch said...

You are picking up the G-Man's sense of humor--I think that's a good thing. ;_) That's an awesome photo of a black cat in the header, too.

A longing in your words...beautiful!

Your tale has the familiar ring of other tales told in AA meetings everywhere: I left to get a carton of milk and got back home three months later....

Margaret said...

... he will have to go back because he got everything but milk... 21 years of marriage, I KNOW. :)

LOL @ the milk. And LOL @ MZ's comment!

JGH said...

A quart of ice cold milk was pulled from his satchel and they enjoyed a bowl of cereal together, picking up where they left off. There I wrote a happy ending!
:) Love the photo.

TALON said...

Teresa, I think it was a long trip :)

Leenie, thanks! I have to admit, it's hard to pack a big tale into 55 words, but I think she was remarkably nice actually - lol!

Galen, you're so witty, I imagine you being able to come up with some killer twisty! Glad you enjoyed! :)

lol, Brian! I now have a vision of you curled up on the floor in the dairy aisle and people whispering and stepping carefully around you :)

Leslie, thank you! Yes, she doesn't sound like a barrel of laughs, does she? lol!

Anthony, thank you! Glad you liked it!

Thank you, Mandy!

MorningAJ, thank you!

Thanks, Hilary. I have a feeling he might do an about face - lol!

Ellis, lol - smart guy! In my head I'm telling him to keep on walking - lol!

Belinda, thank you. I think he's wishing he'd taken the car and driven right on by...is that mean of me? :)

G, lol - yes, and scratching his head and looking all confused :)

Joey, you sound like my hubby - he comes back with some great stuff, but never the one thing he went for (not that I'm much better without a list).

Lorraine, glad I made you laugh :)

Lynn, I think he's in serious trouble - lol!

TechnoBabe, I think he was deliberate in his lateness :)

lg, were you happy that Li Na won? I wanted them both to :) Yes, I saw that about Laura Newcombe and was so proud. Yes, Missy was lying on the top step and was so relaxed...but the minute I got my camera out she started grooming and then paused to look at me - so her leg was up. She's much more camera shy than her brother Stripey. Your poem and photo - just so stunning! Thank YOU!

Sara, thanks! Glad you liked it. I hope Jon brought the milk or the happy part might be short-lived! ;)

Pheremone Girl, thank you and I've definitely had some of those too!

Margie, thanks and glad it made you smile! :)

Mona, I think Jon's in serious trouble if he doesn't produce the 2% !

Ruth, thanks so much. Yes, it does seem to call for a follow-up, doesn't it?

Patricia, lol - sounds like my hubby! ;)

Alice Audrey, that's right - though maybe that will be Jon's next trip to the store - lol!

Thanks, Jannie :) xxx

Mama Zen, that's exactly what I think - lol!

TALON said...

lime, that's what I was going for. :)

Sandy, lol - Missy is always begging for milk - it would never get here :)

Monkey Man, you're the master of the twists so that's a high compliment. Thank you!

hedgewitch, thanks. That is Missy, Stripey's sister (she's a shy beast).

ayala, thank you!

Enchanted Oak, I guess it's a case of one of those "it's a long story" things.

Margaret, lol - we'll be celebrating 31 years of marriage June 14th so I totally agree :)

Cloudia, thank you :)

My Mom always says "sarcasm is the lowest form of wit", but sometimes it's hard to resist, isn't it? Glad it made you smile!

Boonie, I think she's gonna have to! Lovely to see you! Hope you and Mrs. S are well!

Thanks so much, Sam!

Linda, thanks! I'm glad you liked it!

Rajlakshmi, thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed!

Glad it made you laugh, Shay :)

JGH, I love it! Have you been peeking? I love a bowl of cereal with ice cold milk - it's my go-to snack :)

Very nice creative twist. Captures the imagination making the ordinary into the exotic
and carrying the reader along. I like!

Frieda said...

Very mysterious, I keep on wondering what really happened...did he come back? With milk? Is it a dream?
Well done :)

ha, I bet he forgot!
