(first posted Father’s Day June 2009)
He was the "go to" guy. He was the first one to offer a hand whether you were moving or putting up a new deck. He would not only lend you his truck, but he'd lend you his brute strength as well. He had the right advice, but never gave it until you asked. He always remembered what sort of coffee you drank and would go out of his way to drop off a cup. He had every tool imaginable and never minded loaning. He could make his way around an engine and fix a leaky pipe, but knew exactly when to call in the experts. He enjoyed a pretty face, but loved a sharp mind. He was rarely in a bad mood and always had just the right sort of joke for the occasion. He was at home in blue jeans, but was a stunner in a suit.
He had his faults - who doesn't? He could be endlessly patient with children and animals, but very impatient with foolish people. He had a long memory and if you borrowed something and didn't return it, you never got the chance to borrow again. He worked too hard. Everyone said so. And he couldn't cook worth a darn, though he liked to think his barbeque ribs were the world's best.
He was the sort of guy that both men and women felt comfortable talking to about their problems. He was old enough to be wise, but not so old that he was out of touch. And he knew how to listen. He'd lived life—the good and the bad. He’d experienced hardship and suffered difficulties so when he spoke, people listened.

I wondered who the go to guy went to when he needed something. But it seemed he never needed much. He was too busy giving to be receiving.
And one day the go to guy was gone, leaving a huge void in a whole lot of lives. Who do you go to when the go to guy is gone?
Happy Father's Day to all the Dads who work so hard to make life good.

Just a note to say I'll be absent from blogging for the next few weeks. Life dares to intrude (all good things, but time-consuming things) and I hope to see you all soon. Please stay well and happy...
