Red Moons and Chipmunks

“Do you believe in faeries?”

“Yup.”

“You’ve seen one?”

“Right there—crouching under the bleeding heart.”

“No! That’s a chipmunk!”

“Chipmunks are great friends of faeries.”

“You’re making that up, Grandpa.”

“Faeries danced here last night under the light of the red moon.”

“Grandpa! Moons aren’t red!”

“Not often, but when they are, they’re magic.”

Fairies sometimes wear chipmonk suits, or so I've been told. Beautiful moon pic, and the header shot--what amazing things geese can do with their necks.

Yes, indeed, I believe in fairies too! Great one ~~

Very cute!
I always believed my Gramps silly stories...
I've been known to tell a few of my own lately-
There were pink Bleeding hearts at BBMs last week, but I didn't have the cam that day.
I've never seen a chipmunk here. Guess the faeries don't vaca here!

Oh gosh sweetie, this is fantastic, Ilooked and thought hey I see a faiery, ok maybe a chipmunk either way I love everything about his and your heading, precious

Aww, a heartwarming Grandpa story. I love it! And that moon, wow.

Seems I tell my granddaughter stories like this one and she never believes me until she wakes the next day somewhere different than she remembers falling asleep. One day I may let her down from her moon perch.

Have to believe in fairies nowadays, since there isn't anything else that you can believe in with the world as it is today.

Oh my word. What a lovely photo of that partial moon! Good shot, Talon. That is truly something to study upon.

We have lots of red moons and in the summer they often come up over the foothills of the Cascades and are reflected across the reflection lake below...I can just enjoy it for hours

sometimes the moon comes in the sky light over my bed right into my eyes

I am a firm believer in fairies..
and I have not seen a chipmunk in years and years

Margie said...

Oh, this is just wonderful, Talon.
Lots of magic in that red moon and your writing is also magical!
Loved this!
And gorgeous moon picture!
I so love the moon and have written many poems on it.

Margie :)

There is indeed magic in the stories and all around us. We just have to look for it.

Jannie Funster said...

Ahhhh, I too think chipmunks ARE faeries, yes!! And squirrels are mini warlocks who weave naughty spells on Riley, Charlie, Missy and Stripey.

xoxo

sandy said...

Oh yes, if you see a chipmunk in the trees, there is a fairy nearby. We have dogs, they have chipmunks.

Now, I have to be sure to look at the moon tonight!

Wonderful, warm work. Love this.

First: the geese photo in your header is great. Love the b&w and the look of the gawky goslings.

Grandparents are the best for keeping enchantment alive and sharing it. That was one spooky red moon.

Fireblossom said...

How cute is all that?

I once told my son, when he was little and afraid of ghosts at night, that ghosts are afraid of big dogs (like the one we had). Problem solved, until his idiot uncle told him that I made that up.

I saw the red moon
and thought
the end was here
No faeries or chipmnks
just that red moon
dripping with
the blood of men
who lost their souls

Wish I had a Grandpa like that, fun magic in this for sure.

JGH said...

Are those baby downy geese in your header?? So precious. We have lots of geese around here, but I never get to see these. Don't see many faeries, either!

Everyone should have a little bit of magic in their lives and there's a lot of that in your beautiful stories Talon.

This is a lovely, charming 55---
The moon picture is amazing!!!

TALON said...

Me, too, Pheromone Girl :)

Brian, I agree - the everyday variety is all around us.

hedgewitch, thanks. Never knew that about chipmunks, but I like that the faeries are that connected to them. Yes, the geese are abundant right now and in all stages of development. They are fun to watch.

beccagivens, thank you! :)

A Kwee Life, thank you!

Monkey Man, thanks. Glad you enjoyed!

Galen, sad that the trapped pollution was probably the biggest factor, but it sure was pretty! Glad you liked it! Hope you're having a fabulous weekend!

Thanks, Joan!

Snaggle, thanks. All my grandparents had passed before I was born, so I miss having memories like that. The poor chipmunks - it's all I can do to keep them safe from Stripey, but they love racing around the garden here. The bleeding heart was a sad end-of-season one I picked up a two years ago. It's just thrived and grown magnificent. I think it was grateful to be taken home :)

Lorraine, you sweetie, thank you so much!

Belinda, the moon was amazing. It was back to normal the next night - still lovely, but not quite as magical :)

Walking Man, having a granddaughter to tell stories to must be magical all on its own. I love that - moon perch. What a view of the world that would be!

G, I think you're right - gotta keep some magic alive.

lg, thank you so much! It was strange. When I looked up, I couldn't believe the tone of it.

Thank you, Boonie! Hope you and Mrs S are having a lovely weekend!

Anil, I agree :)

Lynn, yes! :)

lime, thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed!

TALON said...

Patricia, that must be a sight - seeing the moon hanging over the Cascades. I'm with you - I'd be sitting there and drinking all the beauty in.

Margie, thank you! The moon sure is inspiring, isn't it? :)

Linda, I agree - always keep our eyes and hearts open.

Jannie, Charlie agrees about the squirrels - she firmly believes they have an evil agenda! lol! xxx

Sandy, I love that - the faeries having chipmunks like we have dogs! :)

Steve, thank you!

Leenie, thank you. I thought the black and white showed up more of the activity - that particular part of the river is heavily shadowed by the trees. I can't wait to become a Grandma and spreading some of that enchantment around :)

Shay, thank you! Awww - shame on idiot uncle for breaking that spell.

Ellis, now I'm scared! Next red moon and I'll be hiding under the blankets! ;)

izzy, thank you!

ladynimue, I'm so glad you do!

Christine, so do I - I never knew any of my grandparents, but from what I knew of them from my parents, both my Grandfathers would have been the greatest of storytellers.

JGH, there were so many ages and stages of the goslings when I was at a river park. So adorable! Glad you see some faeries, though :)

Gypsy, thank you so much! I'm glad you believe in the magic :)

Teresa, thank you! I bet there are a lot of faeries loving that back 40 of yours :)

Rajlakshmi, thank you so much!

Annie, thank you so much! I hope you and Ron are having an awesome weekend.

Thanks so much, Frieda. When I took the dogs out for their last business of the night, I looked up and was so surprised to see the red hue. So of course I had to try to capture it :)

Havn't seen the moon an several nights... such a nice story, and to
complement... this parallel.

__At our pond, these past few nights have been full of thunder and lightning. Last night, while watching the storm, I noticed our sunflower bird feeder swinging; with each lightning strike's glimmer... a flying squirrel's eyes came aglow!
