Not a phoenix rising from the ashes—being on the river and
all. But up it went. To the ancients, the
blue heron was a sign of wisdom, self-reliance, and self-determination; a
reminder that massive pillars weren’t necessary to stand on one’s own. Truly,
though, the meaning evaporated in the sheer beauty of the moment.

Love that you have the picture in black and white. Great writing~timeless.
Hi Talon .. beautiful shots - love the reed/grass through the still water .. and the heron shot is superb .. you can canoe and take photos! Lovely post - Hilary
Just beautiful - words and photo. What an awesome canoe trip it must have been.
I always admire how you manage to use so few words to capture so damn much. Beautiful.
Every time I try to get a Heron pic in the grass at the M-cove, they fly before I can even get near enough to click! What an awesome take-off shot! Header nifty with reflection too-
Nice ancient info also.
Oh sweetie, this is a masterpiece you must be so excited, I know I am lol
Wow! That's gorgeous, Talon.
Beauty of the moment indeed! what perfection thanks!
A canoe trip sounds awesome! Great shot for us, Talon. Thank you for sharing that awesome moment.
lg
You outdoorsy family! How accommodating this heron was.
Beautiful--and with that same gift of focus and simplicity that a black and white brings. A nice splashy 55.
I used to see heron all the time in my neighborhood. Now, they're rare indeed. What a glorious photo and a glorious moment. Thanks for sharing.
lovely shot !
and all the more inspiring words ..
Talon,
I loved the picture. The slight splash of his feet as they leave the water and the power of his wings is captured in this photo.
The 55 was also interesting. I didn't know that about the blue heron.
Have a great weekend:~)
pillars were not meant to stand alone...and stunning pictures..
Got my attention and gratitude with this one - WOW
I'm just imagining that moment!
Magnificent photo and words!
Thank you, Talon.
This made my day!
Margie :)
Moving and beautiful...love the photo!
Now perhaps this can erase the name an awestruck son of a friend yelled, "Look, it's a long neck blue goose!"
:)
Talon, this is gorgeous !
Hey, if you are barely scratching the surface, I can't wait for what comes next.
A made-me-wish-I-was-there post.
i was there post.
WOW! I'm in awe of this majestic image (as I bow) and I LOVE your 55!
"...massive pillars weren’t necessary to stand on one’s own..." -- what a great line!
The ancients knew well. It's bird one will not forget in a hurry whether seen from near, or from far.
The blog header, only yesterday I happened to see two paintings that work on the same theme, 'rising' in their reflections in the water.
I like the heron, but you know what? I especially love that header!
Hi to Stripey. ;-)
I see them standing in the lake shallows or in nearby ponds but I have never seen on taking flight like the one in your photo. From now on I shall view them in a completely new light including their meaning to the ancients.
Gorgeous shots Talon
been getting out more to shoot
for some reason I always think of you and what angle you would chose - it's always the right one
Love ya moonie
How do you manage to capture such magnificent visuals?! I have trouble focusing well on even still objects..lol! :) Beautifully woven with the words!
magical,
thanks for the treat.
fantastic 55, bless your weekend.
Great shot - and the one up top, too! Couldn't have been easy. I'm headed to Wakulla Springs near Tallahassee, FL next week. Tons of water fowl everywhere there -- Can't wait to get out there with my camera!
Doctor FTSE, you're welcome. And thank YOU!
Galen, thank you. I have to thank my camera - it's great at stopping time ;)
Hope your weekend is a fabulous one!
Brian, thank you!
Cloudia, thank you! I was thrilled when I downloaded it and realized it had turned out as good as I'd hoped :)
Teresa, thank you so much!
Hilary, canoeing is the best way to sneak up on the critters :) Thank you!
Marilyn, thank you. It was really beautiful. Perfect day. Wish I could have a hundred like it :)
Maxine, thank you! What a lovely compliment!
Snaggle, there were so many more heron on the river this year. And osprey, too, which haven't been there for years. This guy wasn't too thrilled when we drifted close, but I was glad hubby spotted him and I could get a fix on him before he took wing :)
Lorraine, thank you! I am :)
Mama Zen, thank you!
izzy, thank you so much!
lg, it was such a lovely day. We needed a break. Thank you! I hope all is well.
TechnoBabe, he was one of the only ones who didn't keep taking off before we could get relatively close. lol - yes, we love the great outdoors :)
That is a great picture. I love the great blue herons. You described his ascension perfectly.
hedgewitch, thank you!
Pheromone Girl, you're welcome. Thank you!
ladynimue, thank you!
Sara, hope your weekend is a gorgeous one. Thank you. I took so many shots, I was thrilled this one captured that brief time between water and being airborne. :)
Thank you, Patricia! :)
Margie, I will miss you, but I know you'll have a lovely time in Nova Scotia. And thank you so much! Look forward to your October return :)
hope, I'm laughing! I hope it works. Though blue geese would be pretty neat, wouldn't they? :)
ayala, thank you! :)
Sandy, thank you. I'm never quite as happy and peace-filled as when I'm out in nature :)
Belinda, thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it :)
Shay, Stripey sends nose bumps (his favorite greeting to his favorite people). Thank you!
Annie, I'm shocked at how much wing is involved in the heron - they look completely different taking off then they do just standing around, don't they?
Leslie, I can't wait to see what you've been shooting. I'm glad you've got some time to get out there and really lose yourself in something fun. xx
Gautam, I have to give most of the credit to the camera :) Thank you so much! Hope you're having a fabulous weekend!
Morning, thank you so much. I hope your weekend is equally blessed :)
JGH, thank you! I can't wait to see your shots and I hope you have a really lovely time. Enjoy every second!
Linda, thank you. Me too about the herons. There were so many this time. It was awesome to get close to them. They seem so self-sufficient to me somehow. :)
I love both the photos! Stunning!
What a fantastic post. Both the picture and your words.
