Bumptious

She leaned over, resting her cheek gently against his chest. A heartbeat, but light and erratic—a butterfly heart. She had ignored the machinery and the monitors, but now their whirs, beeps, and whooshes sounded bumptious as if mocking the still grey figure on the bed. Beneath her cheek, the flutter-heart beat a delicate tattoo.

Taking the moment and turning it so another side is visible--that's what you do here so well. The sense of the fragility of life comes pouring through. Gorgeous flower up top==gloxinia?

Talon, first, your blog looks so beautiful!
Love the new look but I'm sure you will be changing it again and it will have another look that I will love just as much!
Always such a joy to visit here!

This writing is so lovely, so tender!
It brought tears to my eyes!

Nice Primrose header! Mine that color fell n didn't recover this year- More are at the market for $1.70 again but I'm broke this week. I miss it...
I like how you fit the descriptive title word into your 55 fiction, with the swallowtail butterfly pic a perfect complement.
Alot to be said for "still alive!"

Love catching the butterly's proboscis extended like that. Very cool!

__Never thought of them in that fashion... but machines can be pompous too.
"Believe in me... only," their gasconade.

I think it best... we trust in the butterfly.

Kind of hard to hate the monitors for the gracelessness for being monitors yet at the same time they do not over power the slowly beating heart. It is a grand comparative piece.

What a beautiful photo for such a sad story! This makes me think of a child's heartbeat when they are ill~ how it does 'flutter!"

Wow lovely,
Thank you for sharing.

My primroses are all in bloom, but it is really cold tonight and the pink camilia froze last night. Snow predicted for Sunday, but what a warm winter so far.

Your words make me think of my friends sister who just went on Hospice today - losing to breast cancer. Your words are beautiful too, but make me sad

Hi Talon - great words - and those little flutterbyes will have their tiny heart beats frozen out of them ..

Love the colours of that flutterbye - and the bands of markings - which match your 'bumptious' words and phrasing ..

Delightful .. and the photo - cheers Hilary

Thank you, ayala.

Thank you, Christine, though I didn't mean to make you sad.

Galen, I'm glad you enjoyed my sad little tale :)

Brian, thank you. Isn't it a neat word? It's one of those words that's fun to say.

hedgewitch, thank you. The header shot was a primula. After they bloom indoors, I plant them outside in the spring :)

Margie, you know me - I get bored and change the look frequently, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the little tale :)

Alice, it would the worst, wouldn't it? Thankfully, it's fiction. :)

Cloudia, I love that kind of synchronicity :)

Thank you, Anthony!

J Cosmo, thanks.

Snaggle, I agree - as long as the heart still beats. I figured the black swallowtail pic would be the right one for this little tale. Hubby brought me the plant. Nice to have a little color in the house. How are your african violets? Are they surviving? I hope they are.

Eric, thanks!

D, thank you. Now there's a word - gasconade. I love it! Yes, I would tend to believe in the butterfly, too :)

Walking Man, thank you so much.

Claudia, lovely to see you and thank you!

izzy, thank you, and I hope I never have to either. Thank heavens it's purely fiction.

Mama Zen, thank you!

lg, isn't it the worst when little ones are ill? I was so delighted this past summer when the black swallowtail spent an afternoon in the garden. We don't see them much around here. He was very agreeable to lots of shots :)

Thank you, Lynn.

Raven, thank you.

Grace, thank you!

Teresa, thank you. Yes the strength and fragility of hearts and butterflies both, amazes me. :)

Leenie, thank you!

Sandy, thank you so much.

Isn't he just, Shay? :)

Patricia, thank you. I'm sorry about your friend's sister. I know she will be surrounded by love.

Hilary, thank you. As soon as I wrote this piece, I remembered my black butterly pics and it seemed the right one.

Sam, thank you! x

Carol, thank you so much! I'm so glad you liked it :) x

Leslie, hugs to you and thank you. Hope all is well.

Doctor FTSE, yes, please :)

Like others, this writing brought tears to my eyes. I remember my mom in the hospital and how her pulse was so fluttery...you captured a precious, but sad moment to perfection.

The picture was a perfect compliment to your words, not just of the butterfly's wings, but because of how brief their visits usually are. I should know. I've deleted lots of blurry butterflies taking off:~)
